Australian & Oceanian

This is a story of a young couple, Hilal and Miram, who migrated to Australia from war-torn Southern Lebanon looking for a fresh start in Sydney. During a return trip to Southern Lebanon to visit ailing parents, however, they witness the most horrific carnage in the village of Qaana, the village where Jesus Christ performed his first miracle in the New Testament by turning water into wine. A few months after returning to Sydney, Hilal starts hearing voices and commands urging him to harm himself, Mariam and his two children. Less than two years after returning to Sydney and receiving psychiatric treatment Hilal hung himself. Two hours before his death, his observation status was relaxed from half-hourly observation to hourly observation. The change in observation status took place after the treating psychiatrist noted Hilal was making significant improvement under his new medication regimen. Hilal was expected to be released from hospital as fit to return home. Miriam's trauma and love for Hilal led her to find answers and make those responsible for Hilal's death pay for their misdeed or negligence. Her outrage resulted in a coronial inquest and litigation in the District Court. Little did Miriam know that the professional indemnity insurer of Rozelle Psychiatric Hospital was determined to ensure that Miriam's claim never succeeded, either through favorable decision in the District Court or appeals to the highest appellate court, the High Court of Australia. Professional indemnity insurers always have cards up their sleeves and know other means to ensure that claims that can potentially open floodgates do not see the sun. Miriam Jaliel is no exception. This story could only be told by someone who was familiar with the facts and acted as counsel for Miriam Jaliel in her court battle.
